Title: A journey of a bereaved child : exploring Taoism through art therapy

This dissertation examined how art therapy assists a ten-year-old Chinese male Singaporean in expressing and resolving his bereavement over the tragic death, by suicide, of his mother. From a dynamic art psychotherapeutic approach, a qualitative single case study was used to guide the collection and analysis of data. In this case study, the child spontaneously drew upon a rich Taoist myths and folktales, influenced from his Chinese family background during the art therapy sessions. Likewise, the bereaved child included significant Taoist themes such as Chinese gods and ghosts with attention to the loss and bereavement of his mother. The study further explores how the child was able to utilize the Taoist themes to make sense of his mother’s death and attempt to use metaphoric art expression to communicate with her through art therapy intervention. The literature review section includes a discussion on theories regarding bereavement, child development, the impact of parental suicide on children, Chinese cultural components including Taoist symbols, death rituals and practices as well as art therapy interventions with bereaved children. Thus, art therapy and bereavement support would be highly recommended to assist bereaved children in expressing and resolving their loss and painful experience. Finally, further research on cross-cultural perspective of bereavement is needed and will benefit our understanding of multicultural context in future art therapy interventions.
