Title: An acceptance of adoption : an art therapy perspective

This dissertation was derived from the experience of working with a transcultural adoptee in a private setting which provides a range of psychological services. The dissertation explores the capacity of the ten-year-old female adoptee to manage her emotions and feelings developed in infancy and early childhood through loss of genetic attachment, insufficient and inconsistent primary care giving and the disclosure of being adopted. Theoretical perspectives on adoption and adjustments which include psychodynamic attachment, social roles, family systems, stress and coping, trauma and biological perspectives are examined. A qualitative case study approach will be used to demonstrate how art therapy can enable a transcultural adoptive client with disorganized attachment patterns to forge a better relationship with her adoptive mother. Art therapy as a modality is a powerful and effective intervention to facilitate the transcultural adoptee to develop a bond with her adoptive mother in working through her negative emotions thus aiding her to form a positive relationship with her adoptive mother.
