Title: Exploring the dynamics informing Chinese new media artists through Miao Xiaochun
Synopsis:

Through adopting a social semiotic approach, this paper discusses a number of the controversies surrounding Chinese new media art. The histories of Asian art are full of such debates and China’s is no exception. The foci of this Asian Art history paper examine the dynamics informing new media artists and explore how the works of Miao provide insights into longer term aesthetic discourses in Chinese art history. This paper considers: the elements informing Chinese new media artists working in Beijing from the late 1990s to the present; how Deleuze and Guattari can help us unravel Miao’s multi-faceted digital works and, ultimately, undertakes an analysis of Microcosm, the last work in Miao’s Renaissance Trilogy.
