Title: An investigation of teaching and learning of the design process at a tertiary institution in Singapore
Synopsis:

Critical thinking is an important and necessary skill because it is required in the workplace, it can help students to deal with mental and spiritual questions, and it can be used to evaluate people, policies, and institutions, thereby avoiding social problems (Hatcher and Spencer, 2005). Literature on critical thinking from a variety of disciplines provides strong evidence of a powerful tool for developing the minds of students.
To evaluate how students think critically in the Fashion Design and Textiles Department of LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore, a questionnaire based on Richard Paul and Linda Elder’s research on critical thinking was created (Richard, Elder. 2012). The questionnaire was completed by the students of the entire student’s cohort, and was also adapted to questions Fashion Design lecturers on the extent of their critical thinking teaching methods.
The results from the students’ questionnaires were analysed and compared with the lecturers’ questionnaires answers. The results showed the level to which critical thinking was taught in the fashion programme, how students understood critical thinking and how students use these critical skills in their projects.
