Title: Art therapy with an adolescent girl who is an ex-offender providing a secure base
Synopsis:

Insecure attachment and the trauma of abuse can have a significant impact on a child. Its effect may be carried over into the adolescent and adult years. The subject of this case study is an adolescent girl with such childhood experiences and who is an ex-offender. The main focus of the therapy was to provide the client with a secure base from which to explore and express her thoughts and feelings. The artworks revealed aspects of her insecure attachment and past trauma, as well as the consequences. The earlier artworks seemed to reflect mother-child symbiosis (Mahler, Pine, & Bergman, 1975). The later artworks showed increased separateness as well as a move towards connection and mutuality. The client was able to explore her inner world and feelings relating to her identity, her struggles and her past, present and future from a safe therapeutic space. This study also considers how art therapy can be used as a modality for intervention in the rehabilitation of ex-juvenile offenders.
