Title: Investigating the barriers of the final year project of design communication students
Synopsis:

This study investigates the type of barriers students faced while trying to narrow the scope of research project and the problem solving behavior of the students by identifying the type of methods employed by the students to overcome these barriers. The secondary aspect of the study investigated the teaching methods in the design process of the final-year project in the design studio at Lasalle College of the Arts.
It is essential to understand the cognitive behavior of these students, how design students overcome barriers in the research process, and how lecturers guide them in the design process. Consequently, the aim of this paper is to uncover possible gaps in the pedagogic framework to provide an academic intervention for future research. The study involved 70 final-year Design Communication students from the degree programme and five lecturers involved in teaching those students. A qualitative study approach allowed development of a field of data through open-ended interview questionnaires and interviews. Data from both participant groups were collected and compared and analyzed to look for
Responses from both participant groups were crossed examined and determined significant correlation between the challenges the students faced in the process of their final-year project. The findings also showed that more emphasis could be placed on developing the cognitive behavior of the students.
