Title: Therapy retrospective : clients' use of photo-documentation at the end of time-limited art therapy in a psychiatric care unit
Synopsis:

This dissertation investigates the use of client’s photo documentation of the retrospective review at the ending phase of time-limited art therapy. Participants included hospitalized clients in an acute psychiatric ward in Singapore who were referred to art therapy. A qualitative methodology was utilized and a case series of three is analyzed. It became apparent that each participant tended to employ photo documentation in a unique manner, enabling them to further process and consolidate their art therapy sessions. Results of this study indicate that taking digital photographs at the time of the retrospective review may allow the client to exercise choices, to organize and frame the experience of art therapy and additionally give the art therapist insight into the client’s perspective. Furthermore, asking the client to take digital photos of the retrospective review may function as a way to emancipate the client and create a ritual to facilitate transition at time of discharge. This case series suggests that more research is warranted, potentially qualitative in nature, to inquire into outcome of asking clients to take digital photographs of the retrospective review at the end of time-limited art therapy in an acute setting.
