Title: Containment in the therapeutic encounter : forensic mental health, art therapy, and the intrigue of the antisocial persoanlity
Synopsis:

The antisocial personality has been the subject of contentious debate over diagnosis and the efficacy of psychotherapeutic treatments. This paper explores how art therapy may promote effective containment in a forensic mental health setting for a client diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder. The methodology of a qualitative single case study was employed in this research and the case material focuses on the concepts of containment, the client’s engagement in art therapy, and the therapeutic relationship. Results indicate that psychological containment is at the forefront of therapeutic treatment and can be effectively established in art therapy through the physicality of the art media, clinical supervision, and the adequate maternal holding or containing function of the trainee art therapist. The concepts of psychological containment are seen as important elements in the therapeutic process and an actively relational model of art therapy may have a stabilizing influence on a client diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder. More research is needed to explore the efficacy of art psychotherapy treatment with this population by distinguishing what helps from what hinders the therapeutic process.
