Title: Response art on countertransference : medical art therapy with an adolescent male in Singapore
Synopsis:

Art therapy in medical setting complements the medical team’s work in bringing holistic care to the patients by providing a safe space to express and contain their medical experiences. The dynamics of being a part of multidisciplinary team and the space where the therapeutic relationships develop are significant in this context, particularly in the work with adolescent inpatients. Adolescents are going through various changes in transitioning into adulthood. It may become particularly challenging when they are dealing with chronic illnesses, such as epilepsy, and spending time being hospitalized in a children’s ward. Along with the dynamics of working within medical structure, art therapists may experience difficult emotions as they go about providing emotional support for these patients. This dissertation research examines a trainee art therapist’s engagement in making response arts as a way to explore issues of countertransference that arose during therapeutic alliance with adolescent male inpatient who had epilepsy. Using autoethnography approach, this dissertation reviews the trainee’s personal experience in making a series of response arts to understand the culture of working in medical setting and how it impacted the clinical work with the adolescent inpatient. The response arts were valuable in identifying and processing the intense emotions professionally.
