Title: The role of art therapy with a child who is experiencing recurring physical abuse at home : single qualitative case study
Synopsis:

Early relational trauma brought on by childhood abuse develops disorganized attachment between child and caregiver. Disorganized attachment impacts the child in the formation of internal working models, affect regulation and patterns of interactions with others. Processing traumatic experiences through art therapy with child abuse survivors has been widely researched. However, this dissertation focuses on identifying the role of art therapy when working with a child who is possibly experiencing recurring physical abuse whilst under child protection welfare services. A single qualitative case study was the chosen research methodology to provide an in-depth examination of art therapy sessions with a 7-year-old girl living in Singapore. Findings reveal the child’s use of the therapeutic space, therapeutic relationship and materials to process traumatic experiences and how art therapy can complement the work of child protection welfare services.
