Title: The role of response art of the art therapist within an inpatient palliative care setting
Synopsis:

This dissertation will explore the role of response art of the trainee art therapist in addressing the predominant existential themes which emerge in the care of people approaching the end of their lives within an inpatient palliative care setting. Literature in the field of art therapy with palliative care patients reveals how the topic of death and dying, and the associated losses frequently cause the therapist to identify with the patient they are working with in these situations. Studies on intersubjectivity from a psychodynamic psychotherapy perspective demonstrated how an identification between the art therapist and a patient in the area of palliative care can be utilised to therapeutic effect. The trainee art therapist will reflect upon countertransference phenomena aroused by interactions with patients facing end-of-life issues through response art, and examine how the process of reflexivity could in turn guide her therapeutic intervention and help to sustain her practice in this field.
