Title: Exploring student centered learning in visual art education

This case study was designed to probe various occurrences of student-centered learning in the context of Visual Arts Education. In this study, the researcher aimed to observe if the Learning Paradigm took place and how it resulted in occurrences of student-centered learning. The focus of
student-centered learning was on the students’ needs, abilities and active participation rather than learning through direct transmission of knowledge, as seen in The Learning Paradigm (Barr & Tagg,1995, p. 16). This study involving the tertiary level Visual Arts classes at LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore was completed to contribute to the knowledge of student-centered learning as a viable teaching and learning pedagogy. Observations were completed in two classes from the Foundation Certificate Visual Arts (FCVA) course, a Diploma level 1 class and three other classes from the Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts (Hons.), Year 2 and 3 courses. The observations revealed
interesting strategies of active and collaborative learning as well as reflective practices. Views of the students on their class experiences were gathered through surveys and the results showed a positive outlook on student-centered learning. Lecturers demonstrated student-centered pedagogy through their innovative lesson designs and deep commitment in developing the students. Their perspectives on student- centered learning were gathered through structured interviews. Results of the study showed that student-centered learning was evident in all the classes, in various innovative ways,
demonstrating rigor in student engagement and a positive impact on learning.
