Title: The therapist's body: somatic countertransference in art therapy with a female adolescent with complex trauma in Singapore
Synopsis:

This thesis explores and analyzes various theories and concepts that are deemed crucial for the understanding of somatic countertransference, such as intersubjectivity, mind-body dualism, the adolescence phase, complex trauma, attunement, cultural influences, and self-care methods. This qualitative single case study discusses key somatic countertransference experiences encountered within art therapy sessions with a female adolescent with complex trauma, how these experiences inform art therapy practice and suggests how art therapists can manage their somatic countertransference effectively. This paper aims to contribute to the emerging body of literature within Asian cultural contexts on somatic countertransference by broadening awareness about this unique experience and suggesting how art therapists can leverage on it to gain further insights about their clients. The clinical implications of the study are to broaden awareness on somatic countertransference and suggest how art therapists may tap onto this experience to further receive crucial and insightful information about their clients. Left unattended, the experience of somatic countertransference may lead to compassion fatigue. Actively seeking and utilizing appropriate self-care methods is therefore vital for art therapists.
