Title: Art therapy as play encounter: therapy with preschool children who have experienced abuse
Synopsis:

A most natural and spontaneous activity in children’s everyday lives, play in fact serves many functions and is vital in ensuring healthy development in the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social domains. The ability to play is however undermined in children who have experienced abuse. Defining play as a state of being that embraces flexibility and vitality, as well as existing within the transitional phenomenon in the intersection of subjective experience and objective reality, this thesis explores how preschool children who have experienced abuse utilize the art therapy encounter as a playful experience to work out their internal conflicts. Findings reveal that the functions of play in expressing aggression and internal states were effected within the therapeutic process of the art therapy encounter. The art materials and toys, as well as the therapeutic relationship with the art therapist, were also utilized by the children to enhance their play process. Through play and in play, the wonder towards life that had once been buried by the adversities of life circumstances was reignited. This thesis validates the importance of play in therapeutic work with this young population and recommends for art therapists to approach therapy with a playful attitude and open mind.
