Title: The significance of culture and ender within art therapy: a qualitative study with older male adults in Singapore
Synopsis:

The implications of culture and gender within art therapy are essential and relevant given how these form a significant part of a client’s identity. Recent discourse in art therapy advocates for culturally informed practice. This is especially important in areas where art therapy is being developed like in Asia. As a male art therapy trainee providing art therapy services to older adults in a residential setting, I needed to consider culture and gender within my therapeutic encounters. This led to the following research question: in what ways may cultural contexts and gender impact the therapeutic encounter within group art therapy with Chinese male older adults with dementia and residing in a nursing home in Singapore? This practitioner-based qualitative research explored this topic through a group case study from art therapy practice. This methodology was selected as it allowed an in-depth understanding of the process and analysis of each individual client within the group highlighting, Chinese culture and male gender. The observational findings showed that the gender of therapist and clients influenced the transferences manifested within group art therapy. Additionally, filial piety was evidenced through various interactions between group members and the art therapist where group art therapy was provided to Chinese male older adults with dementia fostered new social connections.
