Title: Building relationships for emotional growth: facilitating social-emotional development with a school aged boy with autism spectrum disorder through individual art therapy
Synopsis:

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects an individual’s social communication, interactions and potentially daily functioning. Currently, there are many types of therapies and interventions that address the needs of children with ASD. Fostering social-emotional development, however, is a less prevalent objective in some interventions and therapists. Social-emotional development is inherently more challenging for children with ASD due to the nature of the disorder, hence, introducing interventions that promotes such growth is quintessential. This thesis would, thus, like to explore how individual art therapy sessions with a child with ASD in therapeutic settings paves way for social emotional development through establishing a strong, attuned therapeutic alliance, holding and containing, joint attention, shared experiences and art making processes.
