Title: El duende process painting as response art in a shelter for foreign domestic workers in Singapore
Synopsis:

The purpose of this arts-based, autoethnographic, multiple case vignette study was to investigate how the approach of one canvas El Duende Process Painting as a method of individual response art would impact the emerging identity of an art therapist trainee at her first clinical placement in a shelter for foreign domestic workers in Singapore (Miller, 2012). This intuitive and spontaneous approach
facilitated a deep exploration of her relationship with herself, her clients, her peers and supervisors. The sequential layering and deconstructing of materials on one canvas over a period of three months became a symbolic representation of her emerging identity in her journey to becoming an art therapist (Miller & Robb, 2017).
Reflecting on, and dialoguing with her own artwork as well as client material, aided the trainee in recognising, acknowledging and understanding her own biases, defenses and countertransference, which is vital for increased self-awareness and clinical competency (Wadeson, 2010; Fish, 2017). Response artmaking enabled the art therapist trainee to contain difficult clinical material, manage organisational transference, maintain effective boundaries and practice meaningful self-care (Wadeson, 2003; Havsteen-Franklin, 2014). EDPP is a model of response art conceived by Abbe Miller that can greatly benefit both trainee art therapists and practitioners alike.
