Title: Containing bodily turmoil: art therapy with a pre-adolescent boy affected by parental and school corporal punishment in Singapore
Synopsis:

Although corporal punishment of children has been associated with adverse outcomes in numerous studies, it continues to be the most ubiquitous means in which violence is inflicted upon children. Using a qualitative single case study based in the Singapore context, this paper explores the detrimental effects of corporal punishment as one of multiple adverse childhood experiences and how art therapy can facilitate a pre-adolescent child in beginning to heal from these adverse effects. Findings demonstrate that effects of corporal punishment may manifest in art therapy mainly through increased need for containment, increased internal distress, increased aggression, and expressions of internal pain. Containment within the therapeutic relationship, art making processes, and art materials facilitated the safe discharge and expression of difficult feelings. Over time, the experience of art therapy was able to increase capacities for emotional regulation, self-containment, and self-nurture. In highlighting the strengths of this trauma-informed and relationally-focused intervention, it is suggested that improving the quality of child-parent as well as student-teacher relationships are likely to have more long-term efficacy in promoting prosocial behaviours compared to corporal punishment.
