Title: Constructing confidence: art therapy with a school-aged boy living with chronic kidney disease in Singapore
Synopsis:

This practitioner-based, reflective thesis is a preliminary single-case qualitative study on the significance of art therapy with a school-aged boy living with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) who, at the point of writing, was receiving outpatient services at a medical setting in
Singapore. According to developmental theories, autonomy and identity formation are crucial parts of childhood and adolescent development (Erikson, 1968; Issawi & Dauphin, 2017; Perrin & Gerrity, 1984). However, for children living with CKD, their self-esteem and identity are often intertwined with illness (Charmaz, 1983; Reynolds, 2003; Snelgrove, 2015). The impact of illness is manifold and children living with CKD could benefit from more psychosocial support. During the period of this study, art therapy had to be adapted within a medical setting, which comes with challenges of establishing consistency in space and scheduling of sessions (Anand, 2016; Moon, 2002; Whitaker, 2017). Through the exploration and discussion of findings, art therapy was found to be empowering for the child as it enhanced his development of self-competence and mastery through the establishment of a potential space within the therapeutic relationship. Art therapy within medical settings in Singapore can be effectively expanded to provide meaningful therapeutic engagement with a range of clinical populations including children with CKD.
