Title: d e line at e d: exploring New understandings of the creative process
Synopsis:

This thesis is an art-based research study that examines the creative process of a single artist engaged in the art-making process. It was a self-study of a fashion designer who is also the researcher, hence, identified as the ‘artist/researcher’ in this study. A new art- making project was initiated solely for this research purpose. The artist/researcher chose to create a three-dimensional (3D) representation of a Linkograph. A Linkograph, designed by Gabriela Goldschmidt, is a graphical representation used to show the relation between creativity and design ideas. (Goldschmidt & Tatsa, 2005, pp. 594-609). The aim of this research was to examine the creative process of the artist/researcher in order to inform her own teaching practice in fashion.
For this study, Sawyer’s (2012) creative process and Ward, Smith and Finke’s (1999) model of creative thinking supported the investigation. A qualitative research design was implemented and data was collected through a written journal. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis (Adams, Khan, & Raeside, 2014) and categorised using the key definition found in Sawyer’s eight-stage creative process and Ward et. al.’s Geneplore model. Uncategorised data was investigated using a method of hermeneutic circle (Irwin, 2004, p. 33).
The research was able to identify the artist/researcher’s creative process in art-making. The research indicated multiple understandings of the creative process. A proposed creative process model was constructed to describe another dimension of the creative process that may enhance teaching of fashion design.
