Title: Creativity in the 21st century primary visual arts classrooms: Singapore teachers’ perceptions and pedagogical practices
Synopsis:

This report examined Singapore Teacher’s perception of creativity and their teaching practices in their primary visual arts classrooms. It aimed to study how teachers perceive and understand creativity, one of the key 21st century dispositions as stated in the Ministry of Education’s framework for 21st century competencies and student outcomes (Ministry of Education, 2016). Quantitative and qualitative data were collected by means of online questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, from Primary Visual Arts (PVA) teachers on a volunteer basis. An explanatory sequential mixed methods approach was used for data collection. 73 PVA Teachers completed the online questionnaire while 11 teachers volunteered for the interview. Overall, participants were found to have positive perceptions of creativity but lack of teacher competency and student readiness were some of the inhibitors of creativity noted from them. The results of the study provided a better understanding of Singapore PVA teachers’ implicit theories of creativity, what it implies for creative education, the challenges they faced and how PVA Teachers could be further supported to foster creativity in the classrooms. Differences were noted in the responses and possible explanations of these differences were discussed.
