Welch, Stanton and Liang, Edwaard and Christe, Nils (2011) Masterpiece in Motion. [Production]

Item Type: Production
Title: Masterpiece in Motion
Synopsis:

Singapore Dance Theatre marked its 23rd anniversary in 2011 and Masterpiece in Motion is an annual production showcasing the best of local and international contemporary choreography. Artistic Director, Janek Schergen, brought three works of equal length together in one evening, separating them with an interval. The centrepiece was a world premiere especially created for the company by Taiwan-born, California-raised, dancer-choreographer, Edwaard Liang. The evening began with a revival of a,"landmark work for the company", first performed here in a collaboration between Australian Ballet and SDT, by dancer-choreographer Stanton Welch - son of Australian dance legends Marilyn Jones and Garth Welch. The third act was another premiere for Singapore, by Netherlands-born Nils Christie, reproduced by his wife, Annegien Sneep, completing a global embrace with this acclaimed collection performed by members of Singapore Dance Theatre.

(Synopsis and Theme)
Maninyas. Originally created for San Francisco Ballet in 1996, Maninyas was Stanton Welch’s first commission outside his home company, The Australian Ballet – his first American exposure, which led to commissions with other companies. The piece consists of a series of pas de deux and pas de trios which depicts the process of ‘unveiling’ that takes place when individuals get to know each other better. As people become familiar with one another, they ‘take off their veils’. Maninyas is set to Australian composer Ross Edward’s Maninyas – Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. Duration: 26 minutes
The Winds of Zephyrus. World Premiere created specially for Singapore Dance Theatre by Edwaard Liang – brings contemporary dance to stratospheric heights, with dancers portraying the wind in all its forms. Winner of the Prince Prize Grant for Choreography and the Choo San Goh Award for Choreography, Edwaard Liang’s pieces have been performed all around the world by companies such as New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Shanghai Ballet and most recently the Joffrey Ballet. Duration: 27 minutes
Fearful Symmetries was created by Nils Christe on Ballet Mainz (Germany). Since then, Nil Christe has remounted his work with Queensland Ballet for their 50th Anniversary International Gala in August 2010. Inspired by and set to music of the same title composed by John Adams, Nils Christe’s favourite composer, Fearful Symmetries, in Christe’s own words, “has incredible drive and is high voltage, and has an element of ‘traveling’, or going somewhere.” Fearful Symmetries plays on colour, echoing Piet Mondriaan’s artwork in its use of black, white and primary colours. It features a mix of pointe work, classical virtuosity, and contemporary elements. This utterly contemporary work, however, holds unusual elements for audiences to discover for themselves. Sponsored by the Ambasador’s Circle 2011. Duration: 27 minutes.
