Title: The effect of art therapy on a female adolescent with depression

This dissertation is based on the findings from a qualitative single case study with a 14 – year old female adolescent who is diagnosed with depression. Her depressive feelings which encompass low self-esteem, loneliness, vulnerability, and fear of rejection and isolation, have manifested through a wide range of self-destructive behaviors such as self-injurious behaviors, suicidal ideation, suicidal attempts, and the excessive use of the Internet for sexual activities which will be referred as ‘cybersex’ (Bower, 2008). The key research question concerns the effect of psychodynamically oriented art therapy on improving the client’s insight to her maladaptive relationship patterns and her emotional resilience (Hankin & Abela, 2008). The art therapy space was intended to provide the client with ‘containment’ and ‘therapeutic alliance’ through which she could identify, express and process her depressive feelings without the fear of being criticized or judged (Bion, 1962 a). Theoretical concepts for the case conceptualization and intervention plans were derived mainly from psychodynamic theories such as ‘object relations’, ‘therapeutic alliance’ and ‘intersubjectivity’. Art therapy interventions constituted 18 individual sessions. The effect of art therapy intervention will be measured through the collection and generation of data, which include observation of the client, review of artworks and process of art-making. Findings from the case study will demonstrate how art therapy, which was provided in an intersubjective framework, could help the adolescent with depression develop an insight to her emotional resilience and healthy relationship patterns.
