Title: Beyond the end

Mortality is a subject that has been dealt with throughout the history of art. For centuries, artists have attempted to portray their interpretations of the subject, perhaps informed by the religious landscape, cultural trends or their personal experiences. As we advance into this globalized world of the 21st century, cultural attitudes towards death and depictions of mortality are constantly being updated. Does art still have a place in addressing issues of mortality? And if so, to what extend can it inform its viewers?

The first part of my essay explores how this subject is being integrated into various cultures in the past, and attempts to investigate how it is being viewed since modernity. I also included accounts of my experience with mortality to highlight its relevance in my practice. The second part attempts to analyse the works of some artists who regularly deals with this subject or related topics to draw comparisons to my work. My practice attempts to explore how the end of life is extended beyond his/her mortality as traces of memories, and this is being looked into in part three of this essay.
