Title: Exploring a local compositional voice at transcultural intersections

The purpose of this practice-based inquiry is to document and describe the process and
development of a suite of musical etudes that explore possible transcultural amalgams. These etudes were created by fusing ethnic musical traditions found in Singapore with Euro- American classical and contemporary (art music) compositional forms. The exegesis traces the processual and creative development of the musical component and situates it in the context of Singapore’s cultural and musical landscape, with its attendant concerns of identity and cultural progress in this modern global city. The motivation for this project was to contribute to the ongoing discourse of music identity in Singapore, and to offer a personal expression of a local compositional voice. The etudes involved various combinations of transcultural transactions between the Chinese, Malay and Indian musical traditions within Western musical forms, in the hope of uncovering points of identification at these intersections. Some of the issues that arose in the compositional process included the challenge of integrating distinct and disparate entities, and the limitations of notation. As music identity is subject to negotiation and mediation, this singular compositional voice is offered as a personal expression or version of an intended local sound, with meanings and identifications open to interpretation and appreciation. From a pedagogical standpoint, it is hoped that this study will lead to the implementation of a composition curriculum that includes learning and creating music at transcultural intersections.
